Blackbird Technologies has settled patent infringement lawsuits with Pet Gear and PetEgo.

Blackbird Technologies is a company formed in 2014 to help independent inventors and small companies monetize unused or underused patents. Founders Wendy Verlander and Chris Freeman were partners at two of the most successful intellectual property law firms in the country and have litigated cases for some of the largest technology companies in the world. At these large firms, Ms. Verlander and Mr. Freeman recognized that smaller players were not able to realize the same value from their patents and decided to start a company with that goal in mind.

Blackbird Technologies filed its first lawsuits in September 2014 on United States Patent No. 6,425,349, relating to a bicycle pet carrier, in the United States District Court for the District of Delaware. An inventor of this patent, Barbara Laskin, had tried for years to commercialize the product, but was ultimately unsuccessful because of the high costs of manufacturing.

In the last quarter of 2014, Blackbird Technologies settled the first of the pet carrier lawsuits with manufacturers Pet Gear (14-cv-01163), maker of the 3-in-1 Pet Carrier, and PetEgo (14-cv-01162), maker of the Pod iLove pet carrier. Cases filed against retailers of these products, such as PetSmart, Walmart and Target were dismissed.

“We are gratified to be able to help Ms. Laskin, and other inventors and small companies. All too often, these smaller players have few options when trying to derive value from their patents, even though many describe true innovations,” stated Wendy Verlander, President and CEO of Blackbird Technologies.

Chris Freeman, VP and Head of Litigation at Blackbird Technologies adds: “This is what Blackbird Technologies does – we bring top quality legal services to bear with vastly increased efficiency. This allows us to engage an underserved market, including Ms. Laskin. It has been a rewarding experience for all involved.”

Ms. Laskin commented, “I spent more than a decade and a lot of money trying to bring my invention to market, but there were many unforeseen obstacles along the way. I am grateful to Blackbird Technologies for helping me recover some revenue from this patent.”
